Why Spring and Fall Dominate as Peak Travel Seasons
I visited Seoul during April 2022 expecting mild weather and cherry blossoms. What I got was an unforgettable experience that justified every premium dollar I spent. Spring runs from March through May, with temperatures ranging from approximately 42°F to 64°F (5.7°C to 17.8°C). The cherry blossoms typically peak approximately one week after blossoming, so you will be able to see cherry blossoms in full bloom in Seoul around April 10. The cherry blossoms transform parks like Yeouido and Seokchon Lake into pink wonderlands. I walked through crowds of locals and tourists, all captivated by the fleeting beauty. Book accommodations three months in advance during this period because hotels fill quickly. I paid 40% more for my hotel in April compared to February, but the experience was worth every cent.
Fall became my favorite season after visiting Seoul in October 2023. Autumn spans September through November, offering crisp air and brilliant foliage. The average temperature in fall hovers around 15 degrees Celsius (59°F), making it a pleasant time for some outdoor fun. I hiked Bukhansan Mountain in mid-October, though Bukhansan Mountain reaches its peak foliage on November 4, so late October to early November offers the most vibrant colors. The city celebrates multiple festivals during fall, including the Seoul Lantern Festival. The Seoul Lantern Festival is held at the Cheonggyecheon Stream area from the first Friday to the third Sunday of November every year. I attended this festival and watched thousands of illuminated lanterns create magical scenes. Crowds during fall are slightly smaller than spring, giving you more breathing room at popular attractions. I secured better deals on flights by booking two months ahead instead of waiting until the last minute.
Both seasons share common advantages that make them ideal for first-time visitors. The weather remains predictable with minimal rain compared to summer months. I packed light layers and rarely needed heavy coats or umbrellas during these periods. Air quality tends to be better in fall than spring, when sand storms from the Gobi Desert region of China and Mongolia sometimes make an appearance. Street food tastes better when you can comfortably stand outside eating tteokbokki and hotteok. I explored Myeongdong and Insadong during these seasons without sweating through my clothes or shivering from cold. The moderate temperatures let you walk extensively without exhausting yourself. I averaged 15,000 steps daily during spring and fall visits compared to 10,000 in extreme weather seasons.
Summer and Winter Offer Budget Advantages Despite Weather Challenges
I traveled to Seoul in July 2021 during monsoon season and saved 50% on accommodation costs. Summer runs from June through August, bringing high humidity and frequent rainfall. The Korean summer is hot and humid, with average mean temperatures peaking at 25.7 degrees Celsius (78°F) in August. I sweated through three shirts daily while exploring Gyeongbokgung Palace and Bukchon Hanok Village. The Korean rainy season, or jangma, begins in mid-June and continues for about a month. I carried an umbrella everywhere and learned to embrace indoor attractions like museums and shopping centers.
